Other Site Characteristics

The area of Moni Elonas and Charadra Leonidiou is a long gorge at the eastern side of Parnonas mountain range. Starting from sea level close to the village of Leonidio, it crosses the Elona's Monastery locality ending in the village of Kosmas at about 1000 m altitude. It is composed mainly of calcareous rocky ecosystems but at the higher parts Abies cephalonica thrives.

4.2 Quality and importance

Recently in the area of Moni Elonas and Charadra Leonidiou, some very interesting plant taxa have been found. Some of these are very important and very rare like Potentilla arcadiensis, for example, which shows the importance of the Greek mountains for the survival of very rare plant taxa. Also, in the calcareous rocky ecosystems Greek endemics prosper. Some of them have been recently described and four of them are exclusively endemic to this gorge and exist in very small populations, consequently being in danger of extinction. As concerns the fauna of this site, there is poor information. The jackal Canis aureus is a threatened species in Greece (category "Vulnerable"). Apart from this animal, all the vertebrate taxa listed in section 3.3 and marked with motivation C, are protected by the Bern Convention. The lizard Ophiomorus punctatissimus, and the snake Malpolon monspessulanus are also protected by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981 receiving motivation C for this reason. Similarly, the legless lizard Ophiomorus punctatissimus is additionally indicated by motivation D as it has the westernmost end of its distribution area in central-eastern Greece and Peloponnisos. The hare Lepus europaeus is marked with motivation D since it is generally rare in Greece.
