Other Site Characteristics

The area of Langada Trypis is a gorge of c.13 km in length. It consists of a large area of rocky ecosystems, but in the area forest of Abies cephalonica and Pinus nigra ssp. pallasiana prosper well. The area is located next to the north side of Mt. Taigetos. It includes part of the valley of Alagonia and is the only natural path to cross the Taigetos mountain range from Sparti to Kalamata. It is a well isolated area. The site area includes one subpopulation of Silene holzmannii.

4.2 Quality and importance

The gorge of Langada Trypis offers shelter in its unique rocky ecosystems to many Greek endemic plants, some of them i.e. Hypericum taygeteum, Silene echinosperma and Silene goulimyi prosper only on the vertical rocks of this area and their populations consist of very few individuals. These four taxa are all distributed in the southern part of Greece (Peloponnisos only, or Peloponnisos plus the islands of Kefalonia, Ithaki and Zakynthos (Ionian islands). Motivations C and D indicate that the relevant taxa are included in the lists of the Bern Convention and the Greek Presidential Degree 67/1981, respectively. Also, the hare Lepus europeaus is marked with motivation D since this animal is generally rare in Greece due to hunting.
