Other Site Characteristics

This site is located a few km east of the town of Gytheio and is the innermost place of the Lakonikos Gulf. Evrotas is one of the most historic rivers of Peloponnisos. The river, with a total length of c. 100 km, crosses the historic town of Sparti and plays a significant role in the economy of the area.It is to be pointed out however that in nowdays the natural habitats of the area have been restricted to the river and channel beds and the sea shores while the majority of the Delta surface has be planted by orange trees

4.2 Quality and importance

The area is important for passage waterbirds and passerines, and for breeding and passage raptors. Species of concern include: Plegadis falcinellus and Numenius tenuirostris.
