Other Site Characteristics

Cetaceans: This site is located in SW Peloponnisos and expands all around the coasts up to the limit of territorial waters from Marathopoli and Proti Island in the north, to cape Leivadia in the east, including the small islands Schiza, Sapientza and Venetiko. The marine part of the site consists mainly of pelagic waters over the locally steep continental shelf of the Hellenic Trench, although coastal shallow waters form part of the site as well, especially around the small islands Schiza, Sapientza and Venetiko.Marine reptiles (subregion: Zagka, Memi, Koronis): The site includes also the coastal area from Cape Akritas to Zaga/Memi beach and the marine area in front of the beach up to the isobath of 50m. 4.2 Quality and importance

The marine area of the site is very important for cetaceans, since at least four species inhabit the area. These are the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) along the coastal shallow waters and the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), the Cuvier’s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) and the striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) in the deep offshore waters. The site is of extreme importance for the IUCN “Endangered” sperm whales and the Cuvier’s beaked whales (both Annex IV of the EEC/92/43) and has been proposed by ACCOBAMS to be part of a Marine Protected Area for deep diving cetaceans along the Hellenic Trench. It is critical area for the entire Mediterranean sperm whale population (both breeding and feeding take place in the site) and constitutes one of the three hotspots of high densities for sperm whales along the Hellenic Trench. The Mediterranean endemic species Posidonia oceanica, which is distributed throughout this sea down to 40 m depth, forms extensive meadows with high densities of plants. The species Posidonia oceanica is very sensitive to pollution and, thus, used as a bioindicator of the ecological condition of the area. Within its foliage it hosts a number of plant and animal species. The seagrass Halophila stipulacea is confined to the eastern Mediterranean, and its westernmost post is in Peloponnisos. The euryhaline species occurs in the Indian Ocean and at the Red Sea. It has invaded the Mediterranean sandy seabed phanerogam vegetation of Posidonia oceanica and the algal meadows of Caulerpa prolifera after opening of the Suez Canal. The green alga Caulerpa prolifera is a tropical species of the Mediterranean and grows in the warmest parts of the sea, on soft substrate. S. abaster is evaluated as an Other Important Species and is allocated the C motivation since it is mentioned in the Bern Convention.Marine reptiles (subregion: Zagka, Memi, Koronis): A population of Caretta caretta uses the beaches for nesting -the most important is the beach Zaga/Memi- and the marine area in front of the beach is used for mating and resting between succesive nestings (inter-nesting area). Marine reptiles (subregion: Paralies romanou): The sandy beaches are used by a population of Caretta caretta for nesting while the marine area is a foraging area as well as a mating and resting area between succesive nestings (inter-nesting area).Marine Habitats (subregion: THALASSIA PERIOCHI STENOU METHONIS): Various facies of coralligenous assemblages (deep counterpart of Habitat Type 1170) occur along the steep rocky coasts and reefs in the area. Detritic and rhodolith beds (Habitat Type 1110) consist part of the circalittoral sedimentary bottoms, especially across the Methoni Straits between Methoni and Sapientza island. An extensive coralligenous formation of low relief (“coralligenous platform”) also occurs in the same area, at depths between 25-40m.
