Other Site Characteristics

This site comprises three rocky islets which are located off the central-east part of the island of Kythira and belong to the Prefecture of Attiki. The altitudes of Prassonisi, Antidragonera and Dragonera are 13m, 20 m, and 36m, respectively. Prassonisi is the smallest islet, and Dragonera the biggest. All the islets are uninhabited. Human interference is not intense; it is confined to grazing by a small number of goats. On the islets of the site, as it happens on small islands in general, there are distinct vegetation zones: 1) a littoral zone, inhabited by true halophytes (Limonium sp., Lotus cytisoides, Frankenia hirsuta etc.), 2) a sublittoral zone, which is not washed by sea-water but is influenced by the salt spray and is inhabited by halophytes, as well as phrygana species, 3) an interior zone, characterised by phrygana species, such as Euphorbia dendroides (found in impressive formations on Dragonera and Antidragonera), Coridothymus capitatus, Teucrium divaricatum, Teucrium polium etc. The interior zone is missing from Prassonisi because of its small size. There is an extended sublittoral zone with "islet specialist" plant species, such as Brassica cretica ssp. aegea, Allium commutatum and Anthemis scopulorum.

4.2 Quality and importance

The main elements of the quality and importance of the site are: 1) their bird fauna and 2) their plant and habitat profile. Field works as well as analysis of the floristic data have shown an important diversity in the flora and the physiognomy of these islets. It should be noted that some species occur mainly on islets («islet specialist» plant species): Anthemis scopulorum, Allium commutatum, Lavatera arborea, Brassica cretica ssp. aegaea, Convolvulus oleifolius etc. Some of these species seem to base their existence in the area on islet populations mainly. Anthemis scopulorum is an «islet specialist» Aegean endemic (new to Kythira area) which is found on Prassonisi as co-dominant species along with Brassica cretica ssp. Allium gomphrenoides, with distribution on south Peloponnisos, Kythira and Antikythira, is found on all three islets of the site. The presence of Bupleurum greuteri, which is an endemic species known from south Peloponnisos and Kythira, on Dragonera is very interesting. The mediterranean seal has been found at Prassonisi, but the information available is not yet sufficient for the evaluation of its population.
