Other Site Characteristics

Kalloni's bay is the largest bay of Lesvos. Situated in the SW part of the island it has a surface of 110 Km2, a maximum depth 19 m approximately and a mean depth of 10 m. The marine area covers approximately 80% of the site. It is one of the most important fishery centres of Greece. Towns and villages surrounding the bay have a total population of 11600 inhabitants (1991 census). Within the bay and in a depth varying from 10 m to 20 m characteristic VTC (Vases Terrigenes Cotieres) societies are observed. Geologically the area consists of volcanic rocks and alluvial deposits.

4.2 Quality and importance

Important wetlands are formed in the N and E parts of the bay. Rare, threatened and/or uncommon bird species for both Greece and Europe pass-by or nest in the area.OTHER IMPORTANT SPECIES IN 3.3 WITH MOTIVATION D:Mammals: Erinaceus concolor is protected by the Presidential Decree 67/81.Plants: Iris ochroleuca and Silene squamigera are protected by the Presidential Decree 67/81. Cotula coronopifolia is very rare in Greece (Hansen & Nielsen 1993).All the orchid species listed in the section of "other important species" are protected by the CITES Convention (Annex C).Invertebrates: Heodes alciphron is a threatened butterfly. Cordulegaster charpentieri, Epallage fatima and Platycnemis pennipes according to van Tol & Verdonk (1988) need protection. Hydraena filum is a threatened invertebrate species in need of protection (Jach, 1991, personal communitcation). NOTES: Myotis blythi lesviacus, included in section 3.2.c. as Myotis blyhti, is a subspecies endemic to Lesvos. The site includes adequate bushy habitats for Papilio alexanor (Annex IV).
