Other Site Characteristics

This fully marine site extends ~20 km along the coastline of Northeast Lesvos (from Palios to Nees Kydonies), including numerous reefs and islets (Panagia, Barbalias, Mavri Plakouda, Tsoukalas, Aspronissia). The total area spans about 62 km2 of the coastal seabed, only occasionally exceeding depths of 50m.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site comprises extensive Posidonia oceanica beds (Habitat Type 1120), while various facies of coralligenous assemblages (deep counterpart of Habitat Type 1170), including spectacular but highly vulnerable gorgonian facies (i.e. Eunicella cavolini, Paramuricea clavata), occur along the steep rocky coasts and reefs of the site (Gerovasileiou et al 2009; Salomidi et al 2009; Sini et al 2019). Detritic and, partly, rhodolith beds (important deep subtypes for Habitat Type 1110) are also common on the circalittoral sedimentary bottoms. The presence of the potentially invasive alien green algae Caulerpa cylindracea has been noted for this site (Gerovasileiou et al 2009).
