  • NP: in case that a species is no longer present in the site enter: x (optional)
  • Type: p = permanent, r = reproducing, c = concentration, w = wintering (for plant and non-migratory species use permanent)

  • Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
  • Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)

Other Site Characteristics

The island of Samos lies in the east central part of the Aegean sea very close to Asia minor, from which its eastern end is separated by a strait, at the narrowest only 1200 m wide. The climate is typical Mediterranean with mean annual rainfall exceeding 500 mm. The site includes the area of Alyki located in the South-eastern part of the island, 0.2 km W of Psili Ammos village. It is a shallow lagoon, which occupies the area of the old salt-pits where works stopped in 1970. The dominant species in this area are: Limonium sinuatum, L. vulgare, Juncus heldreichianus, Juncus acutus, Phragmites austalis, Sarcopoterium spinosum and species of the genus Tamarix. During the last decades the area of Alyki has developed to an importand wetland.

4.2 Quality and importance

This is an important site for wintering and passage waterbirds. Species of concern include: Tadorna ferruginea.
