3. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Back to top3.1 Habitat types present on the site and assessment for them
No habitat types are reported for the site
3.2 Species referred to in Article 4 of Directive 2009/147/EC and listed in Annex II of Directive 92/43/EEC and site evaluation for them
- Group: A = Amphibians, B = Birds, F = Fish, I = Invertebrates, M = Mammals, P = Plants, R = Reptiles
- S: in case that the data on species are sensitive and therefore have to be blocked for any public access enter: yes
- NP: in case that a species is no longer present in the site enter: x (optional)
- Type: p = permanent, r = reproducing, c = concentration, w = wintering (for plant and non-migratory species use permanent)
- Unit: i = individuals, p = pairs or other units according to the Standard list of population units and codes in accordance with Article 12 and 17 reporting (see reference portal)
- Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
- Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)

Other Site Characteristics
A group of islands west of the island of Chios, covered with maquis and phrygana and few trees. The site is located in the region of Psara and Antipsara islands in the Northern Aegean Sea. The site includes the Antipsara island and a group of small islands such as, nisides daskalio, mastrogiorgi, prasonisi, kato nisi, mesiako, koutsoulia etc. It consists of a 2.7 n.m. marine extension around Antipsara, including coastal marine areas along the western coast of Psara, from Cape Pounta Roussos in the northwestern point down to Cape Timios Stauros at the western tip of the island. The marine extension in the southern reduses to 1.5 n.m. south and southeast from the small island kato nisi. The marine area engulfs 14 uninhabited islets surrounding Antipsara and western Psara. The islands are dry, with minimal tree cover and mainly covered by phrygana. The coastline is characterised by steep coastal cliffs and rocky shores which are particularly important nesting and resting sites for seabirds and colonial raptors. There are degraded sand dune systems and sandy beaches on the southern coast of Antipsara. Apart from seabirds, the Mediterranean Monk Seal has been recorded in the marine area of Psara. |
4.2 Quality and importance
This site is important for breeding seabirds and breeding and passage raptors. This site is important for breeding seabirds and breeding and passage raptors. Species of concern include: Calonectris diomedea, Puffinus yelkouan, Phalacrocorax aristotelis and Falco eleonorae. The area hosts one of the largest Puffinus yelkouan colonies in the Northern Aegean. The birds use waters adjacent to the colony for rafting and feeding. Large numbers of rafting birds have been recorded gathering within the marine area during the evening, while foraging flocks are smaller. |
