Other Site Characteristics

This site includes the island of Kastellorizo (or Megisti) and the smaller islands of Ro and Strongyli. The marine part covers 16% of the site.Very few people live on the two small islands. The island Kastellorizo has now a resident population of less than two hundred people. The village was, at the beginning of the century, a town with many thousands of people (it reached up to 14.000). Even now, during the summer the population is much greater. The men who are live on the island now, live on tourism, animal breeding or fishing and there are very few and small cultivations. The island is rocky with hills, covered by phrygana and maquis. At some areas the slopes are covered with pioneer vegetation with Sedum spp. (habitat type 8230). The inland water bodies cover a very small area. In the marine part of the site there are posidonia beds and sublittoral rocky seabeds. Many buildings and other human constructions on Kastellorizo have an architectural interest. There are stone constructions built during the Arabs' pass from the island as water tanks. There are also houses dated from the ninenteenth and from the first decades of the twentieth century very beautyful and complex architectural decoration. The small island of Strongyli is the eastermost point of Europe.

4.2 Quality and importance

The islands Kastellorizo, Ro and Strogyli, the easternmost border of Europe, close to the Asian coast, are, regarding their flora and fauna, of great ecological and scientific interest. At the rocky coasts and the marine caves one can often observe the monk seal Monachus monachus. This is one of the few sites of this species in EEC. T From the floristic point of view, the islands’ importance is evident in the endemic or stenoendemic species, and in the rare or isolated species with wider distribution, but for which the three islands are the only sites they are found in Greece or in Europe. However, floristic data are scarce and further studies are needed. Finally, many buildings and other human constructions on Kastellorizo have architectural interest.OTHER IMPORTANT SPECIES WITH MOTIVATION D The snail is protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81); also the island is not only the only site of its distribution in the EEC, but the only part in the world where this snail is abundant (it is rare on the opposite turkish coasts). The reptiles Cyrtodactylus kotschyi, Hemidactylus turcicus are protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81). The following plant species are included in the IUCN Red Data List in the category of threatened plants: Ballota grandulosissima, Silene leptoclada, Eryngium falcatum, are characterized as «Rare» in Greece (1993) and in Europe (1988), while their World status is unknown; Veronica stamatiadae is characterized as «Vulnerable» in Greece (1993) and in Europe (1988), while its World status is unknown and it is also included in the Corine checklist of threatened plants. The following species are protected by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/81) and are included in the IUCN Red Data List (1993) in the category of threatened plants:
