Other Site Characteristics

A great part of the site is occupied by a small mountain, Profitis Ilias, with the highest peak of the island (Apidia, 600 m) and the springs of Agia Marina, Agios Ioannis and Panagia. These springs are very important for the equilibrium of water on this island. In some parts there are very characteristic screes with singular formations of stones without strict structure (sares), maybe the most distinctive ones in the Aegean. The marine part of the site includes Posidonia beds and small shallow bays.

4.2 Quality and importance

The most important elements of the site are the Junniperus forest, the springs and the marine habitats. It is also is notable on the small mountain as a whole, from the sea to the top, all the typical landscapes of the Cyclades are represented at a good to excellent conservation status without the burden of many tourism pressures. The invertebrate fauna is interesting. Regarding the flora, data are too few for any ecological assessment. There are also several legally protected species of reptiles, notably the snake Macrovipera schweizeri (= Vipera lebetina, an Annex II priority species listed in section 3.2.d), which is included in the National Red Data Book as vulnerable.
