Other Site Characteristics

The site includes Iraklia island and its surrounding islets (Mikros and Megalos Avelas and Venetiko) situated south of Naxos island, and Makares islets, a complex of small islets situated between Naxos and Donousa islands. Representative steep rocks exits at Iraklia island, while most of the islets are rocky and relatively bare. The climate is typical mediterranean with stormy winters and hot, dry summers. Iraklia has a low number of inhabitants which has moreover shown a decreasing trend during the last years. Iraklia was supplied with electrical power in1984, whilst there are no organised discharge units. The few inhabitants are occupied with fishing, cultivations, beekeeping and animal breeding. During the last years tourism activities are developing at increasing rates. The marine area extends 1 n.m. surrounding Donousa island, including 1 n.m. marine extension around the islet group of Makares in the east of Naxos. The waters are generally shallow, deepening to more than 200 m in eastern Donousa. This site also comprises the north-eastern part of Amorgos island and the surrounding islets Psalida, Gramvoussa, Nikouria, Mikro and Megalo Viokastro, Kramvonisi and Petalidi. The maximum altitude is 821m. a.s.l. It is a rocky place with a lot of inland cliffs and sea cliffs.

4.2 Quality and importance

This is an important site for breeding seabirds and breeding and passage raptors associated with coastal cliffs and species associated with cliffs and scrubs. Species of concern include: Puffinus yelkouan, Gyps fulvus, Falco eleonorae and Phalacrocorax aristotelis. The Phalacrocorax aristotelis population breeds on the coastline of Donousa and Makares.. Species of concern also include Larus audouinii.
