Other Site Characteristics

The vegetation is characterized mainly by phrygana, maquis and secondly by cultivations. Amongst the maquis, the dominant species are the Pistacia lentiscus and Juniperus phoenicea. In the valleys, mainly, small patches with olive trees (Olea europea), carob trees (Ceratonia siliqua) and Quercus coccifera are found. Small patches with Arbutus unedo and Juniperus oxycedrus ssp. Macrocarpa are also present in the area. Along the waterstreams there are communities with Nerium oleander, Myrtus communis, Juncus spp. and Carex sp. Geologically speaking, the island had been an active volcano till the middle of Quaternary. It consists of Plio-Pleistocene volcanic rocks and in small areas of Pliocene limestones. There are also a lot of minerals, mainly products of the older volcanic activity. Quarrying activity in nowadays is limited and fully controlled, taking into consideration the environmental concerns.Quite a large number of archeological sites (mesolithic settlements in many cases) occur in the area. The island of Antimilos is located on the west side of the Aegean Volcanic arc. It belongs to the island group of Milos in Cyclades. Geologically, it was an active volcano till the beginning of Quaternary. It totally consists of Pliocene and Pleistocene volcanic rocks. On the top of the island an old, non-active, caldera can be seen. The vegetation is phrygana and dry maquis. There are intermittent streams on the island. On the top, at a height of 670m, there is a small hollow area with standing water during spring time, most likely it is a temporary pond. An old water reservoir, which dates back to World War II, and two buildings are the only constructions by the top. Today the island is uninhabited but there are signs of previous cultivations and settlements. The coastline is rocky and there is only one pebble beach only on the south side. The sea surrounding the island is not deep, but the depth between Antimilos and the island of Milos can exceed 200 m. In the marine area (20% of the site), there are Posidonia beds and near the island there are shallow reefs with a rocky substrate with Cymnodocea beds. We have used habitat type 1240 to describe the vegetated sea cliffs but not necessarily with the plant communities of Euphorbia sp., Limonium sp. etc.Falco eleonorae population values are based on LIFE - Nature «Δράσεις προστασίας για τον Μαυροπετρίτη Falco eleonorae στην Ελλάδα» (LIFE03 NAT/GR/000091)

4.2 Quality and importance

The western part of Milos and the islets of Antimilos, Polyaigos are rather untouched by human development, therefore they are very important sites for birds and other species. More specifically, a large colony of Eleonora's Falcons nests in the area, while Shags and Bonelli's Eagle are also found in good numbers. During migration period, the area is used as a resting and feeding station for many migrants (herons, waders, passerines), while Chivadolimni lagoon holds wintering populations of wildfowl. It is also one of the few islands of the Cyclades that can support breeding pairs of species like the Little Grebe and the Mallard. Finally, Milos and Antimilos are home to the endemic Milos Viper.
