  • Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
  • Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)

Other Site Characteristics

The site is situated on the small section of Sava River immediately downstream of the Zagreb Town. The area along the Sava River near Hrušcica is important for birds of river habitats. Here the Sava River slows its course, losing its speed and strength and changing into the lowland river, depositing gravel sediment. Gravel banks and islands, both bare and overgrown, have developed there. Natural steep river banks are also still preserved here, bare or overgrown with willow and poplar galleries. Several gravelpits in surrounding area enrich diversity of water habitats and represent feeding area for terns and other bird species. It is important area for breeding of Common and Little Tern. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are holocene alluvial deposits. It is lowland along the Sava river with the presence of fluvial and acumulatipon processes. Characteristic for riverbed is the appearance of meanders. Dominant soil is defended from flood alluvial (fluvisol).

4.2 Quality and importance

- This is the only site on the Sava River left with habitats of gravel banks and islands; these habitats are threatened by ongoing and planned changes of water regime - Information on birds population sizes was provided by the Institute for Ornithology (Zavod za ornitologiju, 2013). Numbers presented refer to estimations or exact data based as much as possible on recent surveys - SPA Sava kod Hrušcice sa šljuncarom Rakitje represents the richest breeding site on the Sava River area in Croatia of birds that nest on gravel islands (Sterna hirundo, Sterna albifrons, Charadrius dubius, Actitys hypoleucos); depending on the water regime of the Sava River and weather conditions, there are years with no breeding or only attempted breeding of Common and Little Tern - Steep river banks represent a breeding site for Alcedo atthis and Riparia riparia
