Other Site Characteristics

The lowland area in the eastern Slavonia covered with alluvial oak forests. The site is important for nesting of forest birds of prey and Black Stork. Pastures are very scarce, which strongly limit number of breeding pairs for forest raptors feeding on the meadows as Lesser Spotted Eagle. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are pleistocene marsh loess and holocene marsh deposits (clay and clayey silt). Spačva covers the part of the river Sava holocene alluvial Bosut lowlands, which gradually rises to the south of the river and in the north to the Vukovar Plain. The entire area is rich with groundwater, but also a significant inflow of surface water. Hydromorphic soil: mollic gleysols - substratum is loamy to clayey alluvial deposits; eutric, mollic, calcaric gleysols-clay soil.

4.2 Quality and importance

- Information on birds population sizes was provided by the Institute for Ornithology (Zavod za ornitologiju, 2013). Numbers presented refer to estimations or exact data based as much as possible on recent surveys (data provided by the Institute staff and their field-work associates) - SPA Spačvanski bazen holds 3,7% of national breeding population of Haliaeetus albicilla and 3,7% of Ciconia nigra - SPA Spačvanski bazen holds 7,6% of national population of Dendrocopos medius and 3,3% of Ficedula albicollis - There are only 1-2 pairs of Aquila pomarina breeding in the forest complex; their number is limited by the lack of grasslands around the forest which borders with intensive arable land
