Other Site Characteristics

The area consists of four carp fishpond complexes (Siščani, Blatnica, Narta and Vukšinac) along the Česma River. They contain well-developed emergent and floating vegetation and are surrounded with pedunculate oak forest, wet meadows and mosaic landscape. It is important breeding area for waterbirds as well as stop-over site during migration. Birds also winter on fishponds as long as they are not frozen during cold weather. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are Pleistocene marsh loess and holocene alluvial deposits (gravel, sand, silt and clay). Soils are pseudogley on the plateau (soil horizons are usually powdery clay while the watertight layer is clay loam), loam soil-Pseudoglay-glay partially hydroameliorated; weatland gleys vertic.

4.2 Quality and importance

- Information on BD Annex I birds population sizes was provided by the Institute for Ornithology (Zavod za ornitologiju, 2013). Numbers presented refer to estimations or exact data based as much as possible on recent surveys (data provided by the Institute staff and their field-work associates) - Population sizes of non-Annex I regularly occurring migratory waterbirds that represent target features of the SPA area have been estimated only for wintering populations. There is no data available for concentrations – it is to be researched in future. Estimations include numbers from International Waterbird Census for Croatia (2002-2012). The highest counted numbers of each species in the SPA area was taken as Maximum while the Miniumum was estimated, in accordance with Standard Data Form Explanatory Notes. It is hard to evaluate data as all counts were not made on the same day and it is not clear what the coverage of the area was. There should be a survey aimed at registering ‘zero’ numbers for each species as the basis for further monitoring of SPA target features - SPA Ribnjaci uz Česmu holds 12,5 % of national breeding population of Ardea purpurea and 8% of Aythya nyroca - Alluvial oak forests surrounding the fishponds hold 7,3% of national population of Haliaeetus albicilla, 1,7% of Aquila pomarina, 4,4% of Milvus migrans, 2,3% of Ciconia nigra and 2,5% of Ficedula albicollis
