Other Site Characteristics

This is alluvial lowland of Drava river mouth into the Danube. The prevailing habitats are rivers, wetlands and riverine forests (mostly willow and poplar). The largest wetlands are Kopački rit and fishponds Donji Miholjac and Podunavlje, while rivers are surrounded with oxbows, ponds and smaller river flows. Important river habitats include sandbanks, sand-bars and islands and vertical, eroded, bare riverbanks. The area is important breeding site of herons and egrets, White-tailed Eagle and Ferruginous Duck, wintering site of many waterbirds and stopover site of Spoonbills. This area regularly supports more than 20,000 waterbirds during migration and wintering period. This SPA is a part of Regional Park Mura-Drava that includes the whole section of Mura and Drava rivers in Croatia. Regional Park is included in the Croatian-Hungarian part of the planned 5-Country UNESCO Biosphere Reserve "Mura-Drava-Danube", which was officially approved by UNESC's Man and Biosphere Committee in Paris in 2011. It includes world famous Nature Park Kopački Rit that is included in the Ramsar List as well as protected landscape Dravske šume with large complex of riverine willow and poplar forests. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are Holocene deluvial-proluvial deposits and alluvial deposits. River-wetland lowlands, alluvial flat, lowland river terraces, river-eolian lowlands. Hydromorphic soil: Mollic, Calcaric Fluvisols - sands, gravel; Eutric, Mollic, Calcaric Gleysols-clay soil; Aric Anthrosols.

4.2 Quality and importance

- Information on BD Annex I birds population sizes and National Red List species was provided by the Institute for Ornithology (Zavod za ornitologiju, 2013). Numbers presented refer to estimations or exact data based as much as possible on recent surveys (data provided by the Institute staff and their field-work associates) - Population sizes of non-Annex I regularly occurring migratory waterbirds that represent target features of the SPA area have partly been estimated based on numbers from International Waterbird Census for Croatia (2002-2012). The most estimation for concentrations and wintering populations has been taken from Mikuska et al., 2002. There should be a survey aimed at registering ‘zer' numbers for each species as the basis for further monitoring of SPA target features - SPA Podunavlje i donje Podravlje is an important migration and wintering site for waterbirds – geese (Anser fabalis, A. anser and A.albifrons) with 15,000 individuals on average, and ducks (Anas platyrhynchos, A. crecca, A. penelope, A. clypeata, A. strepera, A. acuta, Aythya ferina, A. fuligula) with max. 50,000 individuals; as well as for Phalacrocorax pygmaeus (max 250), Egretta alba (max 1100) and Platalea leucorodia (max. 1000) (RIS, 2006) - SPA Podunavlje i donje Podravlje holds 27% of national breeding population of Acrocephalus melanopogon, 42% of Ardea purpurea, 7,7% of Ardeola ralloides, 20% of Botaurus stellaris, 26% of Aythya nyroca, 50% of Luscinia svecica - SPA Podunavlje i donje Podravlje holds 82% of national breeding population of Anser anser (National Red List breeding population) and is also important for other nationally threatened species like breeding Anas strepera (12,5%), Panurus biarmicus (33%) and Riparia riparia (22%)
