Other Site Characteristics

This is a coastal plain area near Zadar, neighbouring the SPA Vransko jezero i Jasen. Former numerous wetlands (Vransko polje, Nadinsko blato, Bokanjačko blato) have been reclaimed during the last century and today are covered with mosaic agricultural land. Here is the only registered breeding site of the Roller (Corracias garrulous) in Croatia. Extensive open habitats are the nesting area of Montagu’s Harriers (Circus pygargus). Succession of meadows results in developing Quercus pubescens forests with the biggest Croatian population of Olive-tree Warbler (Hippolais olivetorum). Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are: Flisch sediments (middle and upper eocene - E2, 3), Rudist limestones (cenomanian-maastricht - K21-6), Deluvial-proluvial sediments (a-dprQ2), Liburnian sediments, foraminiferal limestones and transitional sediments (Upper paleocene , lower and middle eocene - Pc, E1, 2) etc./ Soils: Limestone’s and dolomite’s black soil, Swamp’s gley etc./ Lowlands characteristic area; exchangeing of mainly carbonate hills and flysch valleys, that are covered with younger sediments; changes of synclines and anticlines are the main morphostructural feature of this area.

4.2 Quality and importance

- Information on birds population sizes was provided by the Institute for Ornithology (Zavod za ornitologiju, 2013). Numbers presented refer to estimations or exact data based as much as possible on recent surveys (data provided by the Institute staff and their field-work associates) - SPA Ravni kotari holds 100% of national breeding population of Corracias garrulous. The Roller nests in poplar trees that border channels along mosaic agricultural land - SPA Ravni kotari holds the largest breeding population of Hippolais olivetorum (12%) and Lullula arborea (9%) in Croatia - SPA Ravni kotari holds 16,7% of national breeding population of Circus pygargus - SPA Ravni kotari holds 9,4% of national breeding population of Melanocorypha calandra
