Other Site Characteristics

Papuk is a mountain in eastern Croatia, on northern and northwestern border of Požeška Valley. Forest vegetation covers more than 96% of the area. The dominant tree species is beech. Rich with springs and streams. Protected as Nature Park Papuk. Paleozoic core, composed of gneiss, on the edge is covered with cretaceous (limestone and dolomite) and tertiary (marl) deposits. Papuk is the part of the orographic isolated Slavonian Mountain, tectonic wrinkle mountain ridges and massifs (rock complex palaeozoic rock complex). Acid brown soil on metamorphic and clastics; typical luvisols soil on the soft limestone and marl, brown soil on limestone; fertile soil on limestone and dolomite.

4.2 Quality and importance

- SPA is mainly overlapping with Nature Park Papuk, except for additional area of wet meadows with Crex crex on SW slopes of the Papuk Mountain - 95% of the Papuk Mountain is covered with forests – three altitude belts: sessile oak; beech; beech-fir. Beech forests predominate, including old stands with characteristics of primeval forest - Bird species observed only in beech-fir forest indicate an isolated mountain bird community (Dumbović, 2008) - Information on birds population sizes was provided by the Institute for Ornithology (Zavod za ornitologiju, 2013). Numbers presented refer to estimations or exact data based primarily on recent surveys (data provided by the Institute staff and their field-work associates) - SPA Papuk is one of only two sites with confirmed breeding of Hieraetus pennatus in Croatia (the other one being the SPA Bilogora i Kalničko gorje) - SPA Papuk is one of two sites that contain >15% of reproducing population of Ficedula albicollis in Croatia (the other one being the SPA Donja Posavina) - Bonasa bonasia – probably permanent; registered in 1987 (Sušić, 1998) but not confirmed during recent research (Dumbović, 2008); to be further researched - Columba oenas (Other species – National Red List – VU): SPA contains 33% of national population
