Other Site Characteristics

River Mirna is the largest Istrian watercourse. It is classified as a medium-sized river. The length of its flow is 38.5 km. A good part of its basin area of about 560 km2, is located on a waterproof flysch forming a torrential character stream valley together with its tributaries. Lake Butoniga is the artificial lake in Istria, on the river Butoniga. The main purpose is watersupply, keeping the water waves, and irrigation. Main tributaries are Butoniga, Draguc and Račički stream. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are flysch sediments (middle and upper eocene - E2, 3), alluvial sediments (b-aQ2). Soils: marsh gley soil, shallow and medium deep terra rossa. Area is dominated by river Mirna and the basic process in the formation of the relief is fluvial process.

4.2 Quality and importance

- one of six Natura 2000 sites for Coenonympha oedippus hosting two of only eight known localities for C. oedippus - the site represents one of only two localities for Lycaena dispar in Mediterranean biogeographical region in Croatia - important site because it hosts two of Vertigo species, for V. moulinsiana represents one of rare sites with recent findings in Croatia (species is small, rare and hard to detect in field) - as most of the populations in Istria are under anthropogenic influence, this site, with its large A.pallipes population, is considered to be of importance for the conservation of Istrian population of A.pallipes - site is on the south-eastern border of distribution area of Rana latastei so it is important for conservation of overall range and also is one of the most important areas in Croatia for R. latastei - important site for Emys orbicularis - important site for Bombina variegata - important site for 9160, As Carpino betuli-Quercetum roboris - one of the three important sites for Alburnus arborella (syn. A. albidus) in Croatia - site important for Barbus plebejus, between three sites with the biggest population in Croatia
