Other Site Characteristics

Gacko polje is a great karst field bordered by Velebit on one side and Mala Kapela on the other. Field is dominated by the river Gacka, which rises at one end of the field and plunges into the contrary. In length, Gacka river is the third biggest underground river in the world. Spring area of river Gacka consists of many small springs, but three are the strongest: Tonković vrilo, Klanac and Majerovo vrilo. Sources take the form of lakes and very picturesque. Gacka Springs are designated as Nature monuments. Smaller part of Gacko polje is protected as a Significant landscape.

4.2 Quality and importance

- important site for plant species Apium repens and Chouardia litardierei - important site for Euplagia quadripunctaria - important site for habitat type 62A0 - important site for 8310 Caves not open to public - Majerovo vrilo represents cave type locality for species Bythinella kapelana; itˈs also an important aquatic habitat for species Monolistra sketi which is known only from 2 localities
