Other Site Characteristics

Zrmanja river is one of the biggest rivers in Croatia belonging to the Adriatic Sea catchment area although it is only 69 km long. It is a typical karstic river with waterfalls and tufa cascades and is characterized by great variations in the water flow between the rainy and dry season. It springs in southern part of Lika under Postak and flows southward through the narrow and long arable valley through canyon (which in lower course reaches height of 180 m) and flows into the Adriatic sea in the bay named Novigradsko more. Lower part of the flow close to Jankovića buk (waterfall) upstream from town Obrovac is influenced by the tributary Krupa and numerous springs. Downstream of the Jankovića buk, Zrmanja is brackish and as a result of it has a specific biocenosis. To date, 15 fish species have been recorded, 8 of which are endemic to the Adriatic Basin. Downstream of Obrovac, Zrmanja is protected as significant landscape Kanjon Zrmanje and the rest (except of small river stretch upstream of Obrovac, cca 2,8 km and most upstream part, cca 2,6 km) is within borders of Nature Park Velebit.

4.2 Quality and importance

- important site for Vertigo angustior, rare species in Croatia; site represents most southern findings of this species in Croatia - important site for Elaphe quatuorlineata - important site for Lutra lutra - one of the three important sites for Alburnus arborella (syn. Alburnus albidus) in Croatia - only site important for Cobitis bilineata include 100% of Croatian population - important site for Knipowitschia panizzae and Pomatoschistus canestrinii - site important for Barbus plebejus, between three sites with the biggest population in Croatia - only site for Cottus gobio in the Mediterranean biogeographical region - important site for habitat type 62A0, with Ass. Festuco-Koelerietum splendentis - important site for 8310 Caves not open to public - Špilja kod Obrovca represents type locality for snail Hadziella sketi which is known only from 2 localities; Špilja kod Obrovca is one of two locality where snail Saxurinator sketi lives
