Other Site Characteristics

Site Obruč is situated in Primorje – Gorski Kotar County north of the city of Rijeka. The mountain cluster Obruč has an unusually rolling relief and landscapes. The mountain cluster also includes Pakleno – a region with a multitude of picturesque, barren, fissured and faded limestone cliffs, and deep karst dolines or frost pockets, interlaced with uncommonly rich forest life with contrasting alternations of hardwood and dark softwood. Mudna Dol, a deep torrent-carved ravine cut into limestone and dolomite rocks, is an additional, geomorphological attraction of the Obruč mountain-cluster. The "bura" wind is an important factor in the formation of vegetation on the slopes of Obruč. Its grassy slopes and ridges are especially exposed to the strong bora wind. The southern and south-eastern slopes of the Obruč cluster are covered in wide pasturelands, in particular, pastures of narrow-leaved moor grass (Sesleria juncifolia). An endemic association of Genisto-Caricetum mucronatae grows on the spots exposed to the strongest gusts of the "bura". The wind, together with the stony, shallow dolomite and limestone soils, prevent these types of grasslands from becoming overgrown by forests. The Obruč Mountain is well preserved, large area with representative sites for a number of NATURA 2000 habitat types: forests, grasslands, heaths and calcareous rocky slopes. It is characterised by great contrasts in vegetation over a fairly small area; especially diverse are its forest communities and its forms of mountain vegetation (rock vegetation). Mountain vegetation such as the pre-alpine spruce forest and the dwarf mountain pine grow in the near vicinity of or, even, within thermophile sub-Mediterranean forests with downy oak and hop hornbeam (for example, the slopes of Čunina Glava at Hahlić); Edelweiss grows within reach of the sea. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are: rudist limestones (cenomanian-maastricht - K21-6), eolian sands (pQ2) (holocene-Q2) ect. Soils: limestone and dolomite black soil, brown soil on limestone ect. Area has a complex structure of morphogenetic types of relief and complex orographic structure as a result of dynamic geotectonic relations, hydrogeological conditions, climate and anthropogenic influences; presence of slope processes; mountain area.
