Other Site Characteristics

Krupa river, right tributary of Zrmanja river, emerge under the southern slopes of Velebit mountain, not far from Mandići hamlet, from a typical karst spring, and makes its way through the deep cuts in the rocks, bringing underground water from rain and melted snows. In its short course (about 10 km) Krupa built around 19 waterfalls (count the cascades Deveterca as separate waterfalls), most of which are, with its height, abundance and shape, among the most beautiful falls in Croatia. This site also includes the tributary of Krupa - small river Krnjeza which spring from a huge cave at the foot of the Velebit and after a short course runs into Krupa. Krnjeza is probably the shortest and most beautiful rivers in Croatia, only 600m long and in places as deep as 45 m. Located on the island of Pag (northern Adriatic sea, below the Velebit mountain), at the lower third of the island on its southern side.

4.2 Quality and importance

- only site important for Cottus gobio in the Mediterranean biogeographical region - because of the excellent degree of conservation, this site is of great importance for the conservation of Austropotamobius pallipes in Dalmatian part of Croatia - Krupa izvor represents cave type locality for endemic species Belgrandiella krupensis and important underground habitat for other taxa (Monolistra)
