Other Site Characteristics

This site comprises of 196 ha of mostly flat terrain with some small hills, ranging between 750 and 760 m altitude. The site has a temperate humid climate. The weather can change quickly throughout the year: in summer, there can be sudden cloud development and showers. During the cold part of the year from November to March, cyclones and cold fronts with strong winds are frequent. Bulji is situated in the municipality Gračac, which has the lowest population density in Zadar county, having only 11.7 inhabitants per km2. This is the result of natural characteristics and geographical position of the site. The population declined significantly after the conflict in early 1990s, but has recently increased somewhat due to a national programme for reconstruction of destroyed settlements. Agriculture and livestock production are the main traditional pillars of economy. Together with rural tourism, they represent the principal opportunities for regeneration of the area. The grasslands at Bulji are owned both privately and by the State. They are used for hay making, grazing, mushroom collecting, bee-keeping, gathering herbal plants and hunting. Private properties are relatively small and hardly any of the local produce is sold on the market. The north-western part of Bulji site lies on Triassic clastic-dominated schist and marl, interspersed with more or less sandy calcareous sediments, quartzite, tuff breccia and modified tuffs. The south-eastern part of the site lies on Middle Triassic crystalline limestone. The clastic sedimentary rocks are rather impermeable while the limestone bedrock in the south-eastern part of the site is quite permeable. Surface water therefore appears only on the part of the site with clastic rocks, which is mostly covered by eutric brown soil. The limestone part is mostly covered by brown soil with a relatively low nutrient content.
