Other Site Characteristics

Site is located between the Gornji and DonjiKarin 10 kilometers north of the town of Benkovac in Zadar County. The area has several separate units: wider area of river Karišnica (recent stream and valley, and the area of the canyon above the former river) to the estuary at Karin Beach, a length of about 3 km; Canyon and the Bijela stream, from the spring to the estuary at Karin Beach, a length of about 3.5 km; Tuvina - marshy coastal zone of Karin Sea, the area where the estuaries of Bijela and Karišnica merge; and Brežine, hill that separate lower flows of Karišnica and Bijela. The area is characterized by a mosaic of many different habitats caused by morphological diversity, i.e. by dynamic change of wetland, coastal and mountainous terrain. Another factor for diversity of habitats in the area is man, whose longtime influence and use of this space resulted with secondary and different types of habitats - pastures, meadows, small orchards and olive groves. The area has a dual character of climate change of extremely dry and rainy part of the year. Habitats: occasional Mediterranean wetlands (Tuvina), planted Aleppo pine forests of different ages, different stages of oak and hornbeam forest degradation (with all the transitional forms of rocky pastures, through shrubland to low forest), and smaller areas under extensively cultivated olive groves, rocky pastures and eu- and stenomediteranean dry grasslands and sub-mediterranean and epi-mediteranean dry grasslands. Minor surface of wet meadows of sub-Mediterranean vegetation zones. Steep bare cliffs, poorly vegetated gullies, rocky terrain and bramble. Travertine barriers and waterfalls (River Bijela), underground habitats (source caves of Karišnica and Bijela) that throughout the year maintains a certain amount of water, aquatic rooted vegetation along the stream Karišnica in the rainy period. The area is protected as a Significant landscape.

4.2 Quality and importance

- site is important for butterfly species Proterebia afra dalmata - important site for Salicornia and other annuals colonizing mud and sand - Izvor Karišnice represents important 8310 site - important underground habitat for aquatic taxa (Troglocaris agg. anophtalmus, Sphaeromides virei mediodalmatina); - Izvor rijeke Bijele represents important large Miniopterus schreibersii and Myotis blythii nursery;important Myotis capaccinii migration site; important Rhinolophus hipposideros hibernaculum; internationally important underground site for Myotis/myotis blythii, Miniopterus schreibersii, Myotis capaccinii and Rhinolophus hipposideros
