Other Site Characteristics

Northeast of Slunj is Matešić village and a cave of the same name. The entrance is below twenty meters high rock which now only occasionally plunges into the stream. It is a transient cave or cave system Matešić cave - Popovačka cave. About two hundred meters from the entrance to the cave is located stream that continues to flow over the cave and out of the part that is called Popovačka cave, and then flows into the the Korana River. The cave is an important habitat for bats and crayfish, including the entire surrounding area.

4.2 Quality and importance

- Matešića cave and Kuterevčeva cave represent important site for bats - Matešića cave also represents important habitat for other aquatic and terrestrial underground taxa - Niphargus sp., Monolistra sp. - important Miniopterus schreibersii, Myotis blythii, Myotis capaccinii, Myotis emarginatus, Rhinolophus euryale and Rhinolophus ferrumequinum nurseries - important Rhinolophus ferrumequinum migration site - important Rhinolophus ferrumequinum hibernaculum - internationally important underground site for Rhinolophus euryale, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum and Myotis capaccinii - the site is of importance for the conservation of Austropotamobius torrentium in Continental Biogeographical region in Croatia
