Other Site Characteristics

It is located in the northern, upper part of Međimurje county, characterized by undulating relief. Of particular importance are habitats on mesophilic meadows with streams, especially around village of Zebanec and Mali Mihaljevec. This is an important area for the conservation of four species of butterflies - Large Copper (Lycaena dispar), Dusky Large Blue (Phengaris nausithous), Jersey Tiger (Euplagia quadripunctaria) and Scarce Large Blue (Phengaris telejus). Within the area a Nature monument Bedekovićeve grabe (area 13 ha) is located, which includes wet meadows with Great Burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis) and two species of butterflies - Scarce Large Blue (Phengaris telejus) and Dusky Large Blue (Phengaris nausithous). For the survival of this community it is important to maintain the wet meadows (Alopecurus pratensis, Sanguisorba officinalis) on the traditional way (mowing at least once or twice a year). Meadows of this type in Međjimurje are bordered with community of oak and hornbeam forests (Querco Carpinetum). Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are miocene clastic rocks with coal, pleistocene land loess and eolian sand. Highlands with destructive processes (erosion and slope processes) and pleistocene river terrace are present in this area. There are lot of streams and springs. Dominant soils are luvisol on loess, gleyic luvisols.
