Other Site Characteristics

The site Lokve - Sunger - Fužine is located in the south-western part of Gorski kotar, in Primorsko-goranska County. The northern part of this site relies on the southern border of NP Risnjak. This is a mountainous area with predominantly mixed beech-fir forests. Besides forests extremely interesting is presence of water bodies (4 lakes) on this site. Omladinsko Lake is placed near Lokve, with Bajer, Lepenica and Potkoš Lake in vicinity of Fužine. Cave Vrelo is a significant underground feature on this site. Important traffic routes which are connecting the continental part of country with the coast part are passing through this area (Old Carolina Road, Rijeka - Zagreb motorway and railway). Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are: predominantly clastic sediments (carbon, perm - C, P), dolomite (upper noricum, ret - T22-3), limestone and dolomite (lower jurassic-J1). Soils: Brown soil on limestone, acid brown soil. The entire area is under the influence of several streams, presence of fluvial processes under the influence of lakes and streams; western part of the area has larger slope inclination while a east part are slightly flattened and there is a lot of sinkholes, especially in Sungerski lug. In the southern part of the area is located the eastern part of Lepničko field.

4.2 Quality and importance

- important site for 3130 habitat type and one of only two sites where Eleocharis carniolica is present; estimated area of this HT includes water bodies where it occures along the water edges and over the lake bottom when water withdrows. - important site for amphibian species Triturus carnifex and Bombina variegata - important site for butterfly species Euphydryas aurinia and Lycaena dispar - 8310 site - important site for Leptodirus hochenwartii ssp. croaticus which is distributed in the area of Gorski kotar; one of six subspecies of species L. hochenwartii in total and one of four distributed in Croatia; species is assessed as rare at the area of whole site but is also rare at specific localities - Bukovac špilja represents type locality for species Anophthalmus scopolii paveli and Troglohyphantes croaticus, Špilja kod Lokvarskog igrališta represents finding of Leptodirus hochenwartii - important area for stenoendemic and critically endangered species Machaerites cognatus
