Other Site Characteristics

The site includes the Island of Rab, one of the most diverse islands in the Adriatic from the habitat point of view. On the west side of the island one of the most prominent Quercus ilex forests on Adriatic is developed – forest Dundo. Northe-east part of the island is known as Lopar area. In northern and southern parts of the island areas with saltmarshes are developed, important not only for conservation of this rare and endangered habitat type, but for rare fish species Aphanius fasciatus. Southern inland part of the island, covered with submediterranean grasslands, is an important feeding area of Falco naumanni, bird species that has only one breeding locality in Croatia – small island named Dolin just next to the island of Rab. Dundo is, for its values, protected by Nature Protection Act as a Special forest reserve. Lopar is known for its loess features and is protected as an important Landscape. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are rudist limestones (cenomanian-maastricht - K21-6), liburnian sediments, foraminiferal limestones and transitional sediments (upper paleocene, lower and middle eocene - Pc, E1, 2), deluvial-proluvial sediments (a-dprQ2), fluvialdeposits (a-aQ1), flysch sediments (middle and upper eocene - E2, 3). Soils: rockyground, brown soil on limestone, brown soil on limestone. Current form of the island was created after the transgression of the sea after the last glaciation; presence of processes of abrasion. The Island of Rab is characterized by ridge-valley relief structure defined prominent limestone ridge Kamenjak in the northeast followed by dual flysch valley (Supetar-Mundanije and Kamporska), with erosion-derasion ridge formed in flysch and limestone kalifrontska plateau in the southwest. Besides Kamenjak, on the southwest there is another anticline Kalifront - Frkanj - the Island of Dolin. Between those two anticline a synclinal flysch zone is formed, made up of those two valleys that stretches from Kampor and the Supetar cove to Rab and Barbat.

4.2 Quality and importance

- holm oak forests of special reserve Dundo, but also forests of whole Kalifront peninsula, represent one of the real "mediterranean" areas for species Cerambyx cerdo - are is considered to support a significant presence of Elaphe quatuorlineata - the northernmost known site important for Aphanius fasciatus in Croatia - important site for 9340; As Fraxino orni-Quercetum ilicis; As Ostryo-Quercetum ilicis - important Miniopterus schreibersii, Myotis blythii, Myotis emarginatus, Myotis myotis, Rhinolophus blasii, Rhinolophus euryale, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum nursery - internationally important underground site for Myotis blythii, Myotis emarginatus, Myotis myotis, Rhinolophus euryale and Rhinolophus ferrumequinum - importan site for habitat type 62A0 - important site for 8310 - Jamice Plogar - new species for science from tribus Leptodirinae
