Other Site Characteristics

Southern part of the lowland - hilly coastal region of Zadar County, north from the Vrana Lake, south of town Benkovac, southeast from Donji Zemunik. The size of arable land near the most prominent of Croatian coast. Fertile limestone valleys with fields and drained muds alternate with karst ridges forming gentle undulating landscape. Succession of meadows results in developing white oak forests. Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are: flysch sediments (middle and upper eocene - E2, 3), rudist limestones (cenomanian-maastricht - K21-6), Deluvial-proluvial sediments (a-dprQ2), liburnian sediments, foraminiferal limestones and transitional sediments (upper paleocene, lower and middle eocene - Pc, E1, 2) etc. Soils: limestone and dolomite black soil, swamp gley etc. Lowlands characteristic area; exchangeing of mainly carbonate hills and flysch valleys, that are covered with younger sediments; changes of synclines and anticlines are the main morphostructural feature of this area.

4.2 Quality and importance

- site represents one of main centres of distribution for species Protoerebia afra dalmata - the site is considered to be of importance for the conservation of Austropotamobius pallipes in Dalmatia - important site for herpetofauna species Testudo hermanni, Elaphe quatuorlineata and Zamenis situla for which the area is considered to support a significant presence - important site for 8310 Caves not open to public - Špilja kod Vrane represents type locality for critically endangered species Monolistra pretneri, known only from itss type locality and Niphargus illidzensis dalmatinus, Baldina jama represents important site for bats - important Miniopterus schreibersii and Myotis blythii migration site - internationally important underground site for Miniopterus schreibersii
