Other Site Characteristics

Site includes the southeast part of Pelješac peninsula in South Adriatic. Vegetation and climate of the peninsula belongs to the Mediterranean region. The largest area on the peninsula is covered by As. Querco ilicis - Pinetum halepensis, holm oak and manna ash, As. Fraxino orni – Quercetum ilicis, evergreen holm oak scrubs (Ayrto-Quercetum ilicis) and degradation stages of holm oak (As. Erico-Cistetum cretici) that dominate in this southeast part of the peninsula. Halophytic plant communities are developed on stone, gravel and sand banks. Most of the land in use as arable land is used for commercial cultivation of vines, olives and fruit. On the peninsula big populations of wild boar (Sus scrofa), jackal (Canis aureus) and mongoose (Herpestes javanicus ssp. auropunctatus) are present. Parts of the site are protected areas: Special marine reserve Malostonski zaljev and Significant landscapes Uvala Vučina (sand cove on the southwest part of the site) and Uvala Prapratno (gravel cove surrounded with forest on southeast part of the site). Lithostratigraphic units represented in this area are cretaceous limestone and dolomite, rudist limestone and liburnian sediments, foraminiferal limestones and transitional sediments (upper paleocene, lower and middle eocene - Pc, E1, 2). Peninsula was created after the transgression of the sea after the last glaciation; presence of process of abrasion. Dominant soils are brown soil on limestone, anthropogenic soil on karst, rendzina soils on dolomite and limestone.
