Other Site Characteristics
| Site is located at the south of Adriatic coast. Coast line goes from cape Prahivec near Cavtat and ends at few kilometers south of Molunat peninsula. Coast line is mostly steep with cliffs and rocky sea shore. Sea borderline follows 20 m isobaths from cape Prahivec and around north side of Supetar island where it joins 50 m isobaths and outlines west side of islands Bobara, Mrkan and Markanac.
These Islands located at the entrance of the Zupa Bay near Cavtat (so called Cavtat islands) are protected since 1975 as Special ornithological reserve due to their importance as a nesting site for large colonies of Yellow-legged Gull (Larus cachinnans), while surrounding waters rich with variety of marine species and habitats (e.g. Posidonia meadows, ridge communities, habitats of red coral) are proposed for protection as a special marine reserve. After outskirting Cavtat islands sea borderline follows 50 m isobaths at distance 50-400 m from the shore. South part of the site is dominated by Molunat peninsula with associated islands that is proposed for protection as significant landscape due to distinct landscape value, preserved cliffs and interesting vegetation. At the foot of the cliffs there are preserved communities of ridges and rocky bottoms with valuable red corral localities.
Lithostratigraphic units represented around this area are cretaceous rudist limestones (cenomanian-maastricht). It is an area around the Konavoske cliffs which were formed by faulting with presence of process of abrasion. |
