4.2 Quality and importance

A terleten, a kijells alapjul szolgl, un. jellofajok kzl az orszgos s nemzetkzi viszonylatban is jelentos llomnnyal br (A s B kategriba sorolhat) madrfajok kedvezo vdelmi helyzetnek fenntartsa, egyes fajok vonatkozsban vdelmi helyzetk javtsa. Meghatrozott priorits-fajok: Parlagi sas - Aquila heliaca, Blmbika – Botaurus stellaris, Ugartyk - Burchinus oedicnemus, Hamvas rtihja - Circus pygargus, Szalakta - Coracias garrulus, Kerecsen - Falco cherrug, Kkvrcse - Falco vespertinus, Daru - Grus grus, Kis orgbics - Lanius minor, Pajzsos cank - Pluvialis apricaria, Piroslb cank – Tringa glareola. Geographically, it lies on the Heves flood plain and Heves Plain small regions. The surface was formed by the river Tisza and its tributaries (Eger, Lask, Tarna). Today these small regions are characterised by weak relief characteristics, being among the flattest, completely plain areas of the Hungarian Plain. The area has a warm and dry climate with extreme temperature changes and a high yearly share of sunny hours, coupled with a low yearly rainfall. A large part of the region is a flood plain, covered by loessy mud, on which different kinds of alkaline soils were formed. The high flood plains of the northern areas are dominated by meadow soils. Land use mainly takes the form of extensive plant cultivation and grazing. Forestry activities are insignificant as forests cover less than 5% of the area. Grasslands mainly have halophytic vegetations, whose formation and survival has been largely due to human activities (river control, extensive grazing). Consequently, the flora is poor but also valuable, since only few, strongly specialized plant species were able to adapt to these extreme conditions. One of the greatest assets of the area is the presence of rare and endangered bird species. Special nesting species like the great bustard (Otis tarda), the stone curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus), and the roller (Coracias garrulus) and rare birds of prey like the imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca), the saker (Falco cherrug), Montagu's harrier (Circus pygargus) and the red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus) have significant populations here. In the migration period, crowds of shorebirds find safe resting places on the steppes, while in wintertime the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) appears in great numbers.
