Other Site Characteristics

The Velencei-hegysg (Velencei Hills) is a hill range of Palaeozoic crystalline rock mass, situated in the southeastern foreground of the Dunntli Kzphegysg (Transdanubian Mountains). The slightly divided, low hills can be characterised by special geomorphological formations, which are a result of rock quality differences (e.g. granite remnant hills) and the special eliminiation forms of granite (rocking stones, etc.). In the case of sedimentary rocks, in the Pleistocene, the fine dust falling from the air developed into loess and runoff from the mountains cut deep valleys in this material. In the evolution of the special flora of the region granite had a leading role as on the continuously slipping compact rocks only species bearing extreme conditions are able to survive. As a result, special habitats developed like karstic forests and closed rocky grasslands. Apart from these, in the loess-covered ravines as well as in areas with northern exposition other valuable species occur. These habitats home numerous precious species of fauna, including mediterranean and submediterranean elements.
