Other Site Characteristics

Uno dei due siti accertati di nidificazione di Circus aeruginosus e Botaurus stellaris. Unico sito regionale di svernamento di Acrocephalus melanopogon. Valeriana dioica e Viola palustris, specie montano - subalpine. E' presente una delle più vitali popolazioni regionali di Emys orbicularis. Presenza di importanti formazioni a canneto.

4.2 Quality and importance

Il sito rappresenta una delle poche zone umide naturali ancora presenti nella piana risicola vercellese ed è di fondamentale importanza a livello europeo per l'avifauna. Unico sito regionale in cui nidificano contemporaneamente Botaurus stellaris (8 nidi), Ardea purpurea (48 coppie), Circus aeruginosus (3 nidi) e Ixobrychus minutus (10-15 coppie, in regresso rispetto agli anni precedenti). Il sito risulta di notevole importanza anche per l'aspetto vegetazionale: sono state rinvenute cenosi igrofile di margine (è da sottolineare la presenza di Osmunda regalis e di varie specie del genere Rumex presumibilmente vitali per il lepidottero Lycaena dispar; cenosi igrofile a Phragmites australis e Utricularia vulgaris; popolamenti igrofili a Carex spp.;cenosi igrofile a Carex acutiformis e Juncus effusus; cenosi erbaceo-arbustive a Juncus spp. e Salix caprea. La presenza di habitat di interesse locale, e funzionali per la conservazione delle specie di interesse comunitario presenti, quali i canneti e le cenosi igrofile ad alte erbe insediate lungo i canali, aumenta il già elevato valore conservazionistico del sito. Di notevole rilievo, la presenza di un lembo di bosco planiziale a querco-carpineto (Habitat 9160).
