Other Site Characteristics

Antico lago in avanzata fase di colmamento posto nella depressione di un terrazzo glaciale lungo il versante sinistro della media valle centrale; in esposizione sud con clima da continentale a submediterraneo: Il substrato è costituito da calcescisti, prasiniti e serpentiniti del Complesso a calcescisti e pietre verdi della Zona Piemontese. Lalimentazione idrica è fornita dal tradizionale sistema di canali irrigui (rami secondari del Ru di Chavacour) e da sorgenti indipendenti; il lago alimenta indirettamente sorgenti a valle. La vegetazione circostante è di tipo xerofitico con tipiche praterie xeriche e campi di cereali in prevalente abbandono. La presenza antropica è rilevante e segnata dallabitato di Loson e dalla strada regionale che costeggia il lago verso sud.

4.2 Quality and importance

E' in assoluto l'ambiente umido piu' interessante e ricco della Valle d'Aosta. Particolarmente originale il contrasto tra la vegetazione dello stagno e gli ambienti tipicamente xerotermofili del territorio circostante. Presenza di alcune specie molto rare o uniche per la Valle d'Aosta, e ugualmente rare per le Alpi.
