Other Site Characteristics

Il sito comprende lintero massiccio del versante valdostano del Monte Rosa con le testate delle valli di Ayas e Gressoney e larea di crinale tra le conche di Valtournenche, del Breuil e del Vallone delle Cime bianche in Val dAyas. Presenza di vasti apparati glaciali caratterizzati da un notevole sviluppo di depositi morenici. Litologie dominate dai micascisti albitici retromorfosati dellinsieme pregranitico del massiccio del Monte Rosa. La zona delle Cime Bianche è caratterizzata da una morfologia di tipo carsico dovuto ai substrati calcarei del Trias della Zona Piemontese.

4.2 Quality and importance

Il versante meridionale del Monte Rosa è di particolare interesse per gli elevati limiti altitudinali raggiunti dalle Fanerogame: sono state segnalate oltre 60 entità floristiche (tra specie e varietà) che raggiungono qui i massimi limiti altitudinali nelle Alpi. Di queste superano i 4000 metri le seguenti entità: Ranunculus glacialis (fino a 4245 m), Poa laxa (fino a 4245 m), Androsace alpina, Saxifraga oppositifolia, Saxifraga moschata. Tra gli arbusti raggiungono quote eccezionali: Juniperus nana (3570 m), Vaccinium uliginosum ( 3550-3630 m), Vaccinium myrtillus ( 3000-3200 m), Vaccinium vitis-idaea ( 3000-3200 m), Rhododendron ferrugineum (3000 m). Sito Corine. Zona transfrontaliera per le linee migratorie dello Stambecco che mettono in contatto popolazioni di Ayas, Gressoney con Alagna e Macugnaga e da qui in Svizzera. La zona delle Cime Bianche è stata segnalata dalla Società Botanica Italiana tra i biotopi italiani di rilevante interesse vegetazionale e meritevoli di conservazione.
