Other Site Characteristics

Il territorio è occupato dalla vastissima formazione del "Flysch ad Elmintoidi" (Unità di Sanremo-Monte Saccarello); si tratta di una potente alternanza di calcari marnosi, marne, arenarie, argilliti. I tratti sommitali sono costituiti dall'Elemento del Flysch di Sanremo, calcareo-marnoso, poggiante sulle arenarie della Formazione di Bordighera; più in basso sono presenti le argilliti della Formazione di San Bartolomeo e, alla base, il "Flysch Nero", calcareo-arenaceo. Nella parte meridionale del territorio emergono calcari dolomitici mesozoici (Rocca Rossa, Rocca Barbona, Cimone Giaire, Rocca Goina). L'elemento geomorfologico di maggiore rilievo è la dorsale "M. Saccarello - Cima Valletta della Punta - M. Cimonasso - M. Fronté", diretta in senso est-ovest, che, con i 2200 m della prima vetta, costituisce il punto più elevato della Liguria. Esiste una netta dissimmetria tra i versanti settentrionali (pendenza media 25-30%) e meridionali (pendenza media superiore al 100%). La ripidità dei pendii volti a sud e la natura del substrato (strati a reggipoggio ma fagliati e litotipi più o meno erodibili) hanno generato vistosi processi erosivi; imponente, in particolare, la frana di Bottesina. Sul versante nord si evidenziano tre piccoli circhi glaciali ed altrettanti solchi vallivi di esarazione. Il territorio è solcato da vari ruscelli con acque di elevata purezza che, a nord, confluiscono nel torrente Tanarello, e a sud sfociano nel torrente Argentina.

L'area include il comprensorio montuoso più elevato della Liguria. Numerose peculiarità in campo geomorfologico, faunistico, floristico e vegetazionale rendono di particolare pregio l'area in questione, che si segnala per la presenza di endemiti e di relitti glaciali. Sono presenti numerosissime specie di uccelli (stanziali e migratori) di interesse comunitario ai sensi della Direttiva 92/43 CEE e specie protette da direttive/convenzioni internazionali.
