La costa è rocciosa medio-alta. Affiorano litotipi appartenenti alla formazione delle quarziti di M. Bignone Il sito è Riserva Naturale Regionale Isola Gallinara L.R. n°11 del 26/4/1989.

4.2 Quality and importance

E' una piccola isola distante circa 1,5 km. dalla terraferma con un piccolo porticciolo e un antico insediamento; per lo più disabitata durante l'anno tranne che per la presenza di un custode. Nonostante qualche elemento esotico introdotto in passato, l'isola mantiene un forte carattere di naturalità, con habitat mediterranei in buon stato di conservazione. Lungo la costa sono presenti alcune grotte marine. L'isolamento è importante ai fini della biodiversità delle popolazioni. Sono presenti specie di interesse prioritario (Campanula sabatia), specie endemiche, rare o protette da direttive/convenzioni internazionali. L'isola è uno dei rari siti liguri di nidificazione del gabbiano reale.
