Other Site Characteristics
| Istituito con legge nazionale 24/4/1935 n.740 nelle Alpi centrali, al confine con la Svizzera (limitrofo al parco svizzero dell'Engadina), a ridosso ed attorno al grande comprensorio montano dell'Ortles-Cevedale, in un territorio interessante le regioni Lombardia e Trentino, ad una altitudine di 644-3905 m s.l.m. ed una estensione complessiva di 134619 ha, di cui 61000 in Lombardia. Il territorio essenzialmente montuoso nel cuore delle Alpi e dominato dal grandioso massiccio dell'Ortles-Cevedale. Dal punto di vista geologico costiuito da due grandi unit principali tra loro nettamente distinte, le rocce cristalline di origine metamorfica e le rocce calcareo dolomitiche di origine sedimentaria, e da rocce ignee, di estensione molto ridotta, affioranti principalmente al contatto tra il sedimentario e il cristallino. La formazione vegetale pi estesa il bosco a Larice e Abete rosso che ricopre, dal fondovalle ai 1800 m di latitudine, circa 25000 ha di parco. La fauna rappresentata da Cervo, Capriolo, Camoscio, Stambecco, Marmotta, Ermellino, Faina, Tasso, Volpe. L'avifauna presente con Fagiano di monte, Gallo cedrone, Pernice bianca, Francolino di monte, ed inoltre: Picchio Muraiolo, Picchio nero, Picchio rosso minore. Tra i rapaci: Falco pecchiaiolo, Aquila reale, Falco pellegrino, Poiana, Sparviero. Numerosi sono gli uccelli stanziali e migratori che trascorrono il periodo invernale nel parco. Tra gli anfibi: Salamandra alpina, Salamandra pezzata, Tritone alpino, Rana temporaria. |

| L'importanza del sito data dalla elevata diversit di habitat, sono qui presenti tutti i termini della successione altitudinale, e dalla presenza di alcune specie rare o minacciate, rappresentate da popolazioni molto ricche, quali Leontopodium alpinum, Thalictrum alpinum, Saxifraga vandellii. |
