Other Site Characteristics

Il territorio considerato interessa la sponda orografica destra del torrente Tidone e spazia dal fondovalle (circa 680 m s.l.m.) fino a superare i 1000 metri in corrispondenza del monte Pietra Corva (1080 m s.l.m.) ed in località Sassi Neri (1093 m s.l.m.), a ridosso del confine con la provincia di Piacenza. Dal punto di vista geologico si riscontra una grande varietà di formazioni prevalentemente di natura sedimentaria; dominanti risultano i flysh calcareo marnoso argilloso come il "Flish di Monte Cassio", costituito tipicamente da calcari marnosi in strati spessi e molto spessi alternati a strati silicoclastici e carbonatici più sottili. Uno degli elementi di maggior interesse è costituito dagli affioramenti rocciosi ofiolitici. La maggior parte del Sic è ricoperto da boschi di latifoglie (circa il 75%). Alle quote più elevate (850-1000 m) si riscontrano boschi di faggio puri o misti con cerro (Quercus cerris). Alle quote più basse (600 - 850 m) prevalgono i boschi dominati da carpino nero (Ostrya carpinifolia); localmente sono presenti querceti a roverella (Quercus pubescens). Sono presenti, se pur con estensioni modeste, anche nuclei di castagneti degradati per l'abbandono. Il 7% del territorio è occupato da impianti artificiali di conifere a prevalenza di Pinus nigra, realizzati alcune decine di anni fa, non coerenti con le tipologie forestali tipiche dell'area.

4.2 Quality and importance

Il sito risulta di particolare pregio naturalistico, per la presenza di pratelli aridi sommitali ricchi di orchidee e per la flora tipica degli affioramenti ofiolitici. Lungo i torrenti sono presenti e ben conservati formazioni igrofile di muschi calcarizzanti (Cratoneurion, Habitat 7220*). Anche la componente faunistica appare ricca e ben differenziata.
