4.2 Quality and importance

La Riserva Naturale Garzaia di Pomponesco è costituita da una varietà di ambienti e unità vegetazionali di grande importanza nella pianura della Bassa Padana: al suo interno i sabbioni e le lanche affiancano uno degli ultimi esempi di bosco idrofilo planiziale a Salice bianco in buone condizioni nel territorio circostante. La riserva acquista maggiore importanza se rapportata al contesto del paesaggio circostante intensamente coltivato. Fino al 1987 il sito era occupato da garzaie miste di nitticore e garzette, per un totale di oltre seicento coppie nidificanti.
