Valle alpina di origine glaciale del versante meridionale del gruppo dell'Ortles-Cevedale; alla testata della valle, delimitata da cime che raggiungono i 3.000 m, sono presenti vasti ghiacciai e imponenti depositi morenici. La vegetazione è formata da foreste di conifere (abete rosso, pino cembro e larice), alle quali seguono alle quote superiori brughiere subalpine e pascoli alpini. Sono presenti habitat di particolare interesse non compresi nell'all.I della direttiva 92/43/CEE, in particolare:Torbiere acide del Caricion fuscae, Caricetalia curvulae.

Vallata alpina in gruppo montuoso metamorfico, con circhi glaciali e imponenti apparati morenici di straordinario interesse, oltre che per l'aspetto paesaggistico, anche per l'osservazione del dinamismo della vegetazione pioniera. Il sito è di rilevante interesse nazionale e/o provinciale per la presenza e la riproduzione di specie animali in via di estinzione, importanti relitti glaciali, esclusive e/o tipiche delle Alpi.
