Other Site Characteristics

Vasta conca lacustre situata presso il centro omonimo (Giudicarie Esteriori), sbarrata verso il fondovalle da imponenti depositi morenici; fino alla metà del secolo scorso al suo centro era ancora presente un laghetto, oggi invaso da un denso canneto; sono presenti anche alcuni lembi di aggallato a carici e muschi. Numerose vasche di forma rettangolare, ricolme d'acqua, indicano che nella torbiera è stata cavata torba. La vegetazione è formata in gran prevalenza da prati umidi, in passato sfalciati; a seguito dell'abbandono della fienagione, i prati vengono progressivamente invasi da arbusti di salici e di frangola. Sono presenti habitat di particolare interesse non compresi nell'all.I della direttiva 92/43/CEE: Molinion (Gentiano - Molinietum) (10%), Alnetea glutinosae (10%).

4.2 Quality and importance

Si tratta di una delle più grandi torbiere del Trentino, con una vegetazione molto differenziata, tra cui vaste praterie a molinia; il sito ha anche un grandissimo interesse archeologico, per il villaggio palafitticolo costruito nell'antico lago, poi progressivamente trasformatosi in torbiera. Area di interesse internazionale per il transito di molte specie migratrici a medio e lungo raggio nel periodo tardo estivo e autunnale (migrazione post-riproduttiva). Si tratta di un biotopo di vitale importanza per la riproduzione di molte specie di anfibi e rettili. Il sito è inoltre di rilevante importanza per la nidificazione, la sosta e/o lo svernamento di specie di uccelli protette o in forte regresso, e/o a distribuzione localizzata sulle Alpi.
