L'area è prevalentemente agricola con la dominanza di seminativi a frumento, mais, erba medica e con prati irrigui da foraggio. I nuclei di vegetazione naturale sono rarefatti e circoscritti unicamente alla rete dei fontanili della Riserva Naturale Orientata, al nucleo boschivo dell'Oasi Pegolotta, ad una zona umida di origine antropica ad acque laminari (a Nord) ed, infine, al reticolo idrografico principale, costituito dai canali del Consorzio Bentivoglio-Enza, mentre quello secondario viene periodicamente sottoposto a sfalcio. Le attuali risorgive sono tra gli ultimi nuclei di un sistema ben più vasto, oggi residuale, che interessava nel suo complesso l'intero distretto planiziale tra il Crostolo e l'Enza: si tratta di sorgenti (acque dolci, fresche e limpidissime) al limite tra alta e bassa pianura affioranti con pozze, canali e canneti.

4.2 Quality and importance

Specie vegetali RARE e MINACCIATE : Leucojum aestivum, Thelypteris palustris.Specie vegetali RARISSIME e MINACCIATE: Oenanthe aquatica, Succisella inflexa, Valeriana dioica, Zannichellia palustris. Specie animali: popolazione stabile di Knipowitschia punctatissima, endemismo padano veneto in contrazione nel settore padano , stenoecia, esclusiva dei fontanili, minacciato in tutto il suo areale. Esox lucius: scomparso da interi bacini idrografici, indicatore di buone condizioni ecologiche. Le specie rare e minacciate presentano areali limitati agli ambiti planiziali e richiedono specifiche azioni per la loro conservazione. Le specie animali sono inserite nelle liste rosse italiane, sono in costante declino allinterno degli habitat vocati a causa della della compromissione degli stessi o sono endemiche.
