Other Site Characteristics

Ampia palude interna (la più estesa della Toscana) derivante da un antico specchio lacustre, costituita in parte da specchi d'acqua permanenti in parte da aree che si disseccano durante la stagione estiva.

4.2 Quality and importance

Area di grande imporatanza floristica e vagatazionale; presenta specie relitte e aspetti ormai rari di vegetazione idrofitica ed elofitica. Inclusa fra i siti ICBP per la presenza di varie specie di ardeidi (Nitticora, Garzetta, Sgarza ciuffetto, Tarabuso, Tarabusino e forse Airone rosso); segnalata come nidificante irregolare la Moretta tabaccata. Area importante per la sosta dei migratori, lo svarnamento è limitatao dall'attività venatoria. Limite meridionale di diffusione in Europa, di numerose specie di invertebrati paludicoli.
