Other Site Characteristics

Colline di debole elevazione incise da ruscelli in piccole valli umide, con substrati sabbiosi-ghiaiosi, generalmente acidi; prevalgono le superfici boscate (boschi di cerro, rovere, farnia, castagno e pinete di sostituzione di pino marittimo.). Il complesso collinare ha una notevole importanza paseaggistica.

4.2 Quality and importance

Nell'ambito della vegetazione toscana il sito costituisce un caso unico e molto raro, di permaneneza in ambienti umidi a acidi di specie montane discese dall'Appennino in epoca glaciale. I vallini umidi, con stazioni a Sphagnum, ospitano una rara flora retrlittuale microtermica e atlantica. Di grande importanza conservazionistica sono i piccoli laghetti di fondo valle dove si trovano specie relitte igrofile una volta abbondanti in Toscana ed oggi ritiratesi in pochissime stazioni ad areale disgiunto.
