Rilievo calcareo tra i maggiori dell'Appennino umbro-marchigiano con notevoli manifestazioni di carsismo ipogeo (grotte fra le più profonde d'Europa) dove, oltre agli habitat segnalati con codice ed attribuiti alle associazioni: Prunetalia spinosae (5130), Asperulo purpureae-Brometum erecti e Brizo mediae-Brometum erecti (6210), Saxifrago australis-Trisetetum bertolonii (8213) e Polysticho-Fagetum (9210), sono presenti pascoli a Sesleria nitida del Seslerio nitidae-Brometum erecti, cespuglieti a Genista radiata e cenosi a Cynosurus cristatus, dell'alleanza Cynosurion.

4.2 Quality and importance

Il sito rappresenta uno dei migliori esempi dell'Appennino umbro-marchigiano di ambiente montano. Tutte le cenosi sono in buono stato di conservazione; spiccano le faggete della Val di Ranco e del Pian degli Spilli, governate ad alto fusto, e le ampie pareti rocciose del versante orientale del M. Cucco. Un particolare interesse rivestono i cespuglieti a Genista radiata del versante meridionale del Cucco, unici nell'Appennino umbro-marchigiano. L'area racchiude uno dei sistemi carsici ipogei più vasti d'Europa. Assai ricca e diversificata è la flora, tra cui spiccano, oltre alle endemiche, Astragalus vesicarius e Primula auricola, rare a livello regionale. Tra la fauna da segnalare anche Rana graeca (specie vulnerabile), Speleomantes italicus (specie stenotopa e vulnerabile), Coronella austriaca (specie vulnerabile), Buteo buteo, Falco tinnunculus, e Tichodroma muraria (specie poco comuni), Lepus europaeus (specie importante per la catena alimentare dell'aquila reale).
