Other Site Characteristics

Complesso montuoso calcareo contraddistinto, sul versante occidentale, da forre e piccole pareti rocciose. Il manto vegetale, oltre che dagli habitat segnalati con codice ed attribuiti a: Prunetalia spinosae (5130), Asperulo purpureae-Brometum erecti e Brizo medie-Brometum erecti (6210), Saponario-Salicetum purpureae (92A0), Saxifrago australis-Trisetetum bertolonii (8213) e Polysticho-Fagetum (9210), è caratterizzato da boschi cedui di Ostrya carpinifolia, dell'associazione Scutellario-Ostryetum, e da pascoli a Sesleria nitida, riferiti al Seslerio nitidae-Brometum erecti. Sulla sommità del M. Serra Santa è presente un lembo di seslerieto a Sesleria apennina. Sulle balze sono diffusi popolamenti arbustivi a Quercus ilex (9340), mentre sui versanti ombrosi si trovano piccoli nuclei di Castanea sativa (9260).

4.2 Quality and importance

Il sito rappresenta un ottimo esempio di ambiente appenninico alto-collinare e montano. Tutte le fitocenosi sono in buono stato di conservazione; in particolar modo le faggete ad alto fusto del M. Nero, ed i vastissimi pascoli sommitali inquadrati in numerose associazioni. Ricca e diversificata è anche la flora che, oltre alle endemiche, mostra specie rare a livello nazionale come Dictamus albus, rare a livello regionale come Gagea pratensis ed Anthericum ramosum e di particolare interesse fitogeografico per l'Umbria come Poa chaixi. Tra la fauna, da segnalare anche Helicigona (Chilostoma cingulata philippi (mollusco poco comune presente solo nei massicci carbonatici dell'Appennino centrale), Medora albescens (altro mollusco poco comune), Rana graeca (specie vulnerabile), Accipiter nisus (specie rara), Buteo buteo, Falco tinnunculus (poco comuni), Capreolus capreolus (reintrodotto, importante per la catena alimentare del lupo), Lepus europaeus (importante per la catena alimentare dell'aquila reale),
